Anh Do's Experience with Poverty
Anh Do
Anh Do, a comedian and the author of 'The Happiest Refugee' encountered poverty during his early childhood years. His family faced many financial barriers, however overcame them through the support from each other. When Anh's family was looking for a boat, they did not have the correct amount of money to purchase one. Therefore, they not only used their money to buy a boat, but even their extended families and friends. Anh states, "My extended family pooled all their money, called in favours with friends and relatives and sold everything they had-every possession- just to buy a boat." (pg.9) Anh's family overcame poverty through the financial supports and encouragement from extended family and friends. Without the support, Anh's family would have been left confused and unsure of how to provide a better future. Anh's extended family gave up everything for them not only to provide support, but to also reassure them of their love and their close bond.
Another instance in 'The Happiest Refugee' when Anh's family faced poverty was when they first came to Australia. When Anh's family first arrived, they were still facing difficulties with earning money and paying for essential human needs. Anh states, "There were days when the garments were running late and Mum and Dad would have to work through the night." (pg.36) Anh's family overcame poverty through the importance of hard work. Through hard work, Anh's family was able to overcome poverty, as their determination kept them going, despite the obstacles they faced e.g. the amount of hours it took to finish sewing all the garments. Working hard gave Anh's family an adrenalin, allowing them to achieve their goal. Through hard work, Anh's family not only earned more money, but also a better lifestyle.
Through overcoming poverty, Anh do was able to achieve his dreams and ambitions. Anh Do won the 2011 book of the year award, appeared on numerous TV shows and produced a film with his brother Khoa, called Footy Legends. Anh Do is one of Australia's greatest comedians, producing his own TV shows such as 'Anh Does Vietnam', 'Anh Does Britain' and his latest one, 'Anh Does Scandinavia.' He was the author of the best selling book "The Happiest Refugee" and has won many Comedian awards including the 'Sydney Comedian of the Year.' He was a guest star on Deal or No Deal as well as Top Gear Australia. Anh Do accomplished a great deal of things such as winning awards and appearing on TV shows, yet nothing can beat his wide smile!
