Oprah Winfrey, an American actress, producer and talk show host faced poverty during her early childhood years. She lived in great poverty with her grandmother for six years, however was taught to read before she was three years old. One of Oprah's childhood memories with her grandmother was when she was taught how to hang clothes on a drying line. Oprah states, "A still, small voice inside me, really more a feeling than a voice, said, "This will not be your life. Your life will be more than hanging clothes on a line." The certainty of that divine assurance got me through many a difficult moment during my growing years." Oprah Winfrey overcame poverty through maintaining hope and optimism. Through hope, Oprah was able to achieve overcoming poverty as she surrounded herself with positive people and always strived to accomplish her goals no matter what obstacles she faced. She followed her instincts and believed that there was more to her life than hanging clothes on a line.
